(1)Temperature forecast accuracies of Polish proverbs by Prof. Piotr Matczak
Abstract: Proverbs on weather convey the cumulated experience of generations that provide guidelines for agricultural practices, everyday decisions, and other situations. The study presents a comprehensive evaluation of the Polish temperature-related proverbs. From the collected corpus of more than 2000 Polish proverbs, 28 were related to temperature and provided concrete predictions. The proverbs were tested on the basis of temperature (minimum, maximum, and mean) data from 20 weather stations. Some proverbs provided a high proportion (up to 79%) of fulfilled proverbs. The accuracy of the proverbs decreased with time, with values increasing toward the east and north directions of station locations.(2)Perception of trees - experts and residence perspective. Insights from the iTre-es project by Dr. Patrycja PrzewoznaAbstract: Trees protection, especially on private land is a challenging task due to different ecosystem services (ESs) and disservices related to their presence. In Poland at the beginning of 2017 regulations changed and the iTre-es project aimed to assess its influence on ESs services loss using remote sensing and administration data and to investigate residents and local experts’ perception on benefits provided by trees. The results show significant loss of tree-cover areas when regulations were changed. Moreover, trees’ shade, one of key ESs regarding mitigation of Urban Heat Island, is appreciated as one of the main values of trees by both experts and residents of investigated areas.Expert Resumes
