Overview of Physical Parameterizations in Atmospheric Models
2024年10月28日(星期一)上午10:00 - 11:30
Dr. Song-You Hong
received the Ph. D. at Seoul National University on numerical
simulation of a heavy rainfall event using the MM4 in the summer
of 1992. He then continued modeling research in physical
parameterizations of the NCEP GFS and RSM in 1993 summer and led the
development of MRF PBL (Hong and Pan, 1996) and several physics
algorithms. After moving to Yonsei University, Seoul, Korea, in 2000
summer, Dr. Hong led the development of the YSU PBL (Hong et al. 2006)
and WSM (Hong et al. 2004), and WDM (Lim and Hong 2010) microphysics
schemes in the WRF model. Also, he created the
Global/Regional Integrated Modeling System (GRIMs; Hong et al. 2013),
for use in numerical weather prediction, seasonal simulations, and
climate research from global to regional scales. From 2014 to 2019, Dr. Hong led the development of a new global forecast system as
the director of the Korea Institute of Atmospheric Prediction Systems
(KIAPS). The Korean Integrated Model (KIM, Hong et al. 2018) has been
operational at the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) since April
2020. Dr. Hong returned to NOAA in the spring of 2021. He published about 150 peer-reviewed papers and the number of citations exceeds 28,000.This
lecture presents an overview of physical parameterization schemes in
atmospheric models. Followed by the overall concept of sub-grid
processes and the principle of parameterization, all the processes
responsible for atmospheric phenomena will be reviewed in the order of
radiation, surface and planetary boundary layer processes, gravity-wave
drag processes, cumulus convection, and microphysical processes.
